Handrail renovation starts on 7 October 2019

We are improving the safety of the main stairwell at the Ateneum. Handrails, located approximately 90 cm from the wall, will be built on both sides of the main staircase and part of the side staircases. The new handrails will be more accessible than the current wall-mounted handrails. The new handrails will make it easier for visitors to move in the stairwell.

The solid-brass handrails have been designed as a collaborative effort between the Finnish National Gallery, Senate Properties, the Finnish Heritage Agency, and the City of Helsinki Building Control Services. The renovation will take approximately five weeks. The lift and part of the stairwell will remain in use during the renovation. We apologise for the occasional noise and smell caused by the renovation.
