Programme of the evening

The professor of music history Markus Mantere lectures on Kitschiä vai ylevää: luonto esteettisen hartauden nostattajana (‘Kitsch or sublime: nature as an agent of aesthetic spirituality’). In the evening’s concert, the piano artist Eveliina Sumelius-Lindblom interprets works related to the theme, including a piano arrangement of the first part of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony.

The lecture and concert critically reflect on the tendency of Western art music to interpret nature as something more absolute than other programmatic and extramusical referents.
