This exhibition curated from the collections of the Ateneum Art Museum celebrates the centenary of Finnish independence. Covering the development of Finnish art from the time of the Grand Duchy to the 1960s, it highlights historical changes that have taken place in art in Finland and internationally. The show is organised around themes that shed light on landscape painting, portraiture and important movements such as symbolism, as well as on the impact on art of Finnish artists’ travels to Paris.

The touring exhibition follows closely the themes and presentation of the Stories of Finnish Art collection display currently on show at the Ateneum Art Museum. It gives the public in other parts of the country an opportunity to view classic, iconic works alongside more rarely seen pieces. Artists featured in this exhibition include Wäinö Aaltonen, Fanny Churberg, Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Eero Järnefelt, Essi Renvall, Tyko Sallinen and Ellen Thesleff.

The exhibition is being produced by the Finnish National Gallery/Ateneum Art Museum. It has been curated by Anu Utriainen.
