Vincent van Gogh: Street in Auvers-sur-Oise, 1890. Finnish National Gallery / Ateneum Art Museum, coll. Antell. Photo: Finnish National Gallery / Hannu Aaltonen

Ateneum’s handsome international collection consists of over 650 works of art; paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints. The best known artists in the collection include Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Eugène Delacroix, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Francisco de Goya, Amedeo Modigliani, Edvard Munch, Ilja Repin, Auguste Rodin and Anders Zorn.

One of the gems in Ateneum’s international collection is Vincent van Gogh’s painting Street in Auvers-sur-Oise (1890). It is among the artist’s last works, and after van Gogh’s death it came into the possession of the artist’s brother and then his widow, from whom it was purchased by French art critic and poet Julien Leclercq. He organised the first van Gogh retrospective in Paris in 1901, only to die soon afterwards. Leclercq was married to Fanny Flodin, sister of the Finnish sculptor Hilda Flodin, and in 1903 Fanny sold the painting to the Antell commission and it was deposited at Ateneum. Thus Ateneum became the first museum in the world to own a Vincent van Gogh.

The Collections web service of the Finnish National Gallery provides basic information on the works and artists in Ateneum’s international collection.
