Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s painting of Kenya inspired Egs

Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s painting Mount Kenya (1909–1910) inspired EGS. He was fascinated by the idea of a Finnish artist painting in Africa at the beginning of the 20th century. Gallen-Kallela and his family lived in Kenya from 1909 to 1911.

“The paintings I created for the design are nocturnal versions of Gallen-Kallela’s painting. I wanted to capture the mood immediately after sunset. I started by painting a number of versions of a sunset. In my artist’s coat design, I offer my own interpretation of the horizon, terrain and snowy mountain peak in Gallen-Kallela’s painting.”
